“It Coulda Come Off Without A Hitch.”

Just a reminder that weird, scary, nom-de-plume fandom existed long before the internet:

wolfletterThe above is a letter from Uncanny X-Men #182, wherein not only does the author call himself “Wolf,” write in a manner that suggests that he is desperately trying to personify all of the character traits of Chris Claremont’s already-unrealistic Wolverine, but also that he potentially believes that everything that happens in Uncanny X-Men (and, for all we know, all comics everywhere) are actually true.

To be fair to “Wolf,” this came during a period where letters published in the letter column were “answered” by the members of the X-Men themselves, in what was potentially a sign that then-editor Ann Nocenti would much rather have been a writer than toning down Claremont’s particular fetishes of the month (This particular letter was given a response from Storm, who said that she wasn’t sure what “home grown suds” were, but was sure that Wolverine would be grateful for them nonetheless). I remember, at the time, thinking it was a dumb idea, and I was eleven years old.

Even then, I had no idea what “Wolf” was thinking.
