Where I Am On The Internets Today
What’s that, you say? It’s not been mind-bendingly warm here in Portland, Oregon? I’ve not been wearing shorts for the first time in a week (Yes, that’s right, people; I’ve been wearing shorts. Just think about how hot that means it actually was)? Why, yes! And I am much, much happier as a result, let me tell you. So happy, in fact, that I’ll tell you where you can find my writing online today.
Techland: As Marvel Studios makes a crazy PR attack on Ed Norton for seemingly no reason, Jack Kirby’s latter creations return to comics with Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross attached. Oh, and I recapped this weekend’s Doctor Who by pretty much ignoring the episode and explaining why Matt Smith is better than David Tennant in the role. I’m sure you all disagree, but you’re wrong.
SpinOff Online: News posts on who’ll direct the movie version of Wicked, AT&T planning to drop AMC and two other channels over cost, this weekend’s box office, a mystery (but apparently worth buying sight unseen) script, and my favorite news story of the day, record labels suing a porn producer for having porn stars lipsync to songs while in the middle of the sexing. Also, from this weekend, I asked what people wanted from Comic-Con this year, and made up 5 ridiculous sequels to well-known SF horror movies by pluralizing them, but I’m not sure people got that I wasn’t serious.
All this and managing to write things in advance for tomorrow, as well! Who says this isn’t the Age of Mighty Marvel Trying To Get Stuff Done Because There’s A Lot Of Stuff To Get Done?!?
Where I Am On The Internets Today (And Yesterday)
Yes, yes; I completely didn’t do this yesterday because, in my defense, my mind was elsewhere having just been to the glamorous – or, at least, bigger than they used to be – Oni Press offices to read the sixth and final Scott Pilgrim book (which was not what I expected, in the best way possible, by the way; I really enjoyed it). And so, a double-sized edition! Go team! or something.
Techland: From yesterday: The Scott Pilgrim movie cast will make you t-shirts at San Diego Comic-Con, while Graphic.ly would like webcomic creators from the defunct Zuda website to come see about them, thank you very much. Oh, and you don’t have to watch action movies from the 1980s anymore, because someone has created rap recaps of them instead. Which is, of course, awesome. From today: It’s a Movie Chris day, as Chris Nolan wants to make a James Bond movie and Chris Columbus has been rumored to be the man tasked with reinventing the movie Superman. Also, I consider what (little) you’ll need to know before watching Eureka on Syfy tonight. Oh, and I was mean about two comics in the Comic Book Club, as well.
SpinOff Online: From yesterday: Chris Evans talks about his Captain America costume, The Adjustment Bureau gets moved to next year (sadly), Showtime announces their Comic-Con panels, and I asked people whether they’d go back to theaters to watch the rerelease of Avatar (Now with eight extra minutes of footage!). Today, they’re already planning two sequels to The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Hayden Christensen sues USA over his apparent creation of the terrible Royal Pains series, and Chris Pine plans to go to Moscow.
Behind the scenes, there’s been some planning for San Diego Comic-Con (Less than two weeks! Oh God!), lots of sweltering in the heat, and writing pieces for this weekend’s SpinOff features. Go and have yourselves some weekend, will you? I promise to try and do the same.
Where I Am On The Internets Today
A late entry tonight, as work slammed straight into dinner with friends, but nonetheless: This is what you could’ve seen of me today on these internets:
Techland: Will SDCC this year see JJ Abrams and Joss Whedon go head-to-head? Maybe, but I’m much more interested in (and scared about) iTunes being hacked and hundreds of people being charged for purchases they never actually made. Also, I offered 13 thoughts about last night’s new Warehouse 13, and contributed to the second Scott Pilgrim Book Club.
SpinOff Online: News posts on Persons Unknown getting dumped in a Saturday night deathslot by NBC (I actually really like that show, so bah), creative accounting methods to make a movie grossing $1 billion into a money-loser, Ridley Scott’s new crowd-sourcing documentary, a promotional tool that inserts you into Mad Men, and the ever-more-exciting sounding Lego movie from the writers of Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs. And, no, I’m not being sarcastic; I’m genuinely excited about that movie.
This Here Blog: The first music post in awhile, about my love/hate relationship with The Who.
And now, I go to watch a DVD screener of the new Scooby Doo cartoon, and get excited about reading things that aren’t released yet tomorrow. Sometimes, it actually is good to be me.
Where I Am On The Internets Today
The bad side of holiday weekends? That’ll be my inability to get back up to speed fast enough. Which is to say, a smaller-than-usual stash of links from today, made more impressive only by the fact that I get to include all the pieces that went live over the weekend. Great!
Techland: From yesterday, I wonder whether Star Wars is about to get another “new” edition, and then from today, the curious case of the man who died while watching the new Twilight movie, and a news post about AMC’s new post-Civil War drama, Hell on Wheels.
SpinOff Online: Futurama’s a hit!, a Breaking Bad director brakes for zombies on The Walking Dead, Paul Giametti promises that we’ll see some more Bubba Nosferatu, and Netflix and Relativity Media try to change that whole “What happens to movies after they’ve been in the theater” game. But perhaps you’d rather read this weekend’s op-eds: 5 Reasons Why DC Needs A Wonder Woman Movie and Why Faithfulness, Not Honesty, Is The Best Policy. Oh, and there was a (not actually a) poll about Marvel TV in there, as well.
Robot 6: If it’s Tuesday, then it’s time for a new Middle Ground column, which – stunningly! – is actually breaking news for once, as I talk to Josh Blaylock about why Devil’s Due Publishing is abandoning their exclusive distribution deal with Diamond (Clue: Money).
When I put it all like that, it almost looks like I’ve been productive today, doesn’t it..? That’s fooled you all.
Where I Am On The Internets Today
Thank God for Fridays before holiday weekends, because after this – I’m off! For three days! Although you could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, as SpinOff will be running pre-written posts over the weekend, as always. But for today…
Techland: Let there be some speculation over whether Marvel are really going to try to replace Peter Parker as Spider-Man again as well as a reminder that, even though they claim that James Cameron is going to direct a movie for them, the Black Eyed Peas do not know science fiction. Oh, and Wonder Woman has sold out, so apparently all it takes to make that title a success is getting people to talk about her clothes, which is just kind of depressing.
SpinOff Online: Ahead of this weekend’s op-ed posts, some news posts about Russell T. Davies debunking the “Johnny Depp is the movie Doctor Who” rumor, trouble with Scream 4, the stars of Twilight hitting the road to complete their plans for world domination, and Mad Men‘s Abigail Spencer joining the cast of Cowboys and Aliens. Oh, not to mention, a strong suggestion for everyone who doesn’t already to watch Leverage starting with this Sunday’s TNT mini-marathon.
The Savage Critics: Meanwhile, I finally get back to writing for SavCrit with a short post about the Wonder Woman reboot and the much-more-enjoyable Action Comics debut of Paul Cornell and Pete Woods.
And that, my friends, is that. To those with time off this weekend, have fun. To everyone else: I know exactly how it feels, having spent almost two years working weekends and holidays for io9. Sorry.
Where I Am On The Internets Today
You know what I completely forgot to include yesterday? I was part of the Scott Pilgrim Book Club on Techland, finding myself surprisingly mean about the first book in the series. I am forgetful sometimes. Today, though!
Techland: I reported on a couple of legal battles surrounding internet piracy, the closure of DC Comics’ Zuda Comics webcomic imprint, and talked to Jeph Loeb about Marvel TV and that whole shenanigan (Was that an exclusive where he said the shows would be on ABC and ABC Family? I haven’t seen much coverage elsewhere, but I think it may be). Also, because it’s Thursday, I took part in the regular Comic Book Club, talking about Batwoman: Elegy and Werewolves of Montpellier.
SpinOff Online: Hey, they’ve cast a new Spider-Man! Also, news posts on box office for Eclipse and The Last Airbender, the trouble with The Man from UNCLE movie, gangster being the new in-thing for Hollywood, Texas cinemas banning the new Paranormal Activity 2 trailer, and my personal favorite story of the day, the woman accused of bootlegging The Twilight Saga: New Moon sues the movie theater that caught her for inflicting emotional distress.
Also, I went to the gym. But, thankfully, that doesn’t appear on the internet.
Where I Am On The Internets Today
It only seems like a relaxed, quiet day on the intertubes for me today – Well, okay, it kind of has been: I even managed to talk to friends and finish work before 5pm! Clearly, this means that I shall be crushed to death tomorrow. Hopefully I mean metaphorically.
Techland: News on that Wonder Woman reboot, those Johnny Depp is Doctor Who rumors and Sam Worthington launching a comics imprint purely to make more work for himself.
Spinoff Online: More news posts, on Martin Scorsese’s 3D kids movie, rumors of Doctor Who‘s ratings falling in the UK because of Matt Smith’s taking over the lead role, the surreal movie musical being made out of a 1975 Kinks album by Bobcat Goldthwait, a new show by Prison Break‘s creators, and the massive success that The Twilight Saga: Eclipse already is; one more time, people: It made more than three times the amount of Jonah Hex‘s one week take in one night.
Aside from that, there were phone calls and plans made for San Diego Comic-Con and various other backstage shenanigans that you don’t need to worry about just yet… Or do you…?
Where I Am On The Internets Today
As I finish writing up a transcript of an interview I really, really hope to be able to run tomorrow, here’s what went live of mine today on this, the internet we all live on.
Techland: Remembering that it’s the 90th birthday of Ray Harryhausen, accepting that The Hobbit movies are probably cursed, and interviewing the wonderful Dan Goldman about his Red Light Properties webcomic.
Spinoff Online: Five news posts, on casting for the US remake of Being Human, Steve Carell leaving The Office, how badly Jonah Hex‘s flop will cost its studio (Hint: A lot), a Lego movie, for the love of God, and Glee getting a spin-off series on an entirely different channel from the show itself.
Robot 6: The weekly Middle Ground addresses why 2000AD should be mentioned in the same breath as Marvel or DC, honestly.
Remember: Visit all those links many times. Give me lots of hits, and then I shall continue writing. My future is in your hands, Earthlets!*
(* – This may not be exactly true. Well, kinda sorta.)
Where I Am On The Internets Today
As if to prove that I really am doing things on these internets, this is where you can find today’s output:
Techland: Reporting on Jeph Loeb becoming Marvel’s head of TV, Syfy’s new superhero TV show, and rambling about last Saturday’s BBC America screening of Doctor Who.
Spinoff Online: News posts on Sigma Force, what Guillermo Del Toro will direct now that he’s not doing The Hobbit, and Twilight‘s amazing popularity on Facebook, as well as some off-the-top-of-my-head analysis about Loeb and Marvel’s TV possibilities.
The Savage Critics: Finally, finally posting the long-overdue Wait, What? podcasts with the lovely Jeff Lester, who has amazingly not killed me for dragging my feet in taking three weeks to post them after he sent them to me. Seriously, I suck.
Tomorrow: More Techland and Spinoff, as well as the weekly Robot 6 column. But I’ll tell you about that later.
